Proven Progress: How the TurtlEd - IEM Partnership Continues to Accelerate Student Learning

Driving Real Results: Student Growth After 10 Weeks of Targeted Math and Reading Support

When schools invest in the right support, students thrive. This past fall, students in one of our long-standing partner districts, IEM,  completed a 10-week cycle of targeted math and reading intervention, and the results speak for themselves.

Now in our third year of partnership (2.5 years and growing), this collaboration continues to deliver measurable academic gains for students who began the cycle below grade-level expectations. Through personalized learning, small-group instruction, and expert-led teaching, TurtlEd helped students make meaningful progress in both math skills and reading skills, setting them up for continued success in the regular classroom, as well as on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) and the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC).

Measurable Growth in Just 10 Weeks

During the fall intervention cycle, students participated in twice-weekly math tutoring and reading tutoring sessions, led by certificated teachers, and delivered in small groups of 2–4 students. Each group followed a customized learning path designed to target gaps and accelerate growth.

The results:

• Math: Students averaged more than half a grade level of growth in just 10 weeks, with 53% of students showing one grade level or more of growth.
  
• Reading: Students also averaged more than half a grade of growth, with 48% of participants growing more than one grade over the semester. Growth in comprehension-based skills was especially strong with .72 grades growth overall in just 10 weeks!

For students who started the cycle behind their grade-level peers, this level of progress represents a powerful step forward, moving 39% of students up from Tier 3 classification and boosting confidence in their academic abilities.

Math Intervention That Builds Confidence and Capability

Our math intervention program focuses on strengthening essential foundational skills, while helping students develop confidence as mathematical thinkers. Students demonstrated growth across all major math domains, including:

• Numbers and Operations – the area of strongest overall growth, students built skills in basic operations to apply across all domains
• Operations and Algebraic Thinking – students improved strategy use and problem-solving using all operations and critical thinking skills
• Measurement and Data – students increased their ability to apply math to real-world contexts and build understand throughout content areas such as science and engineering
• Geometry – students developed stronger spatial reasoning and conceptual understanding to apply to real-world problem solving

Reading Intervention That Strengthens Comprehension and Understanding

In reading, students showed the most significant gains in areas that directly support academic success across subjects. The reading intervention emphasized skill-building that transfers to classroom learning, including:

• Phonological awareness and vocabulary development
• Overall reading comprehension
• Understanding of both literary and informational texts

Instructional data confirms that students are building the core reading skills needed to support ongoing growth throughout the school year across all content areas.
