New Los Angeles Charter School

School Profile

New Los Angeles (NewLA) Charter School is a middle school located in Mid-City Los Angeles, CA. It serves students in grades 6-8 with small classes, a standards-based curriculum, and a nurturing environment. Through hands-on projects, volunteer work, and a commitment to respect and civic engagement, NewLA equips students with the skills and knowledge to create positive change in both their own lives and the world around them.

In the fall of 2024, TurtlEd continued the partnership with NewLA to deliver high-dosage math tutoring services. The goal was to support student growth, improve attendance, and drive measurable academic outcomes through targeted intervention.

Program Details

TurtlEd aimed to meet the school’s objectives by providing high impact Math tutoring services to 30 middle school students over a 10 week program.

  • Students were assigned to small groups of 4-5, based on their learning trajectories.
  • Tutoring sessions were conducted online after-school.
  • Groups met twice a week.
  • Students worked with the same certified tutor throughout the program.
  • The TurtlEd team worked closely with school administrators to share feedback and encourage attendance.

Student Participation

Out of the 30 students enrolled in the tutoring program, the overall attendance rate was 67%, showing a 7% improvement from the previous semester. Notably, 16 students attended at least 70% of the sessions, while 8 students demonstrated outstanding commitment, achieving an 89% or higher attendance rate, including one student with 100% perfect attendance.

Academic Growth & Key Achievements

There was a clear connection between consistent attendance and academic improvement. Among students who attended at least 65% of sessions, all demonstrated measurable growth. Key findings included:

  • Overall Math Proficiency: 70% of students improved their iReady scores.
  • Numbers and Operations: 6 students advanced by at least one grade level, with one student gaining 3 grade levels.
  • Operations and Algebraic Thinking: 8 students demonstrated growth, with some achieving up to 2 years of progress.
  • Measurement and Data: Over 60% of students improved in this domain.
  • Geometry: 5 students advanced at least one grade level, with one showing 3 years of growth.

Areas for Improvement

While the overall results are promising, there are still areas that require attention, particularly in attendance:

  • 8th Grade: With the lowest attendance rate at 42.66%, no 8th-grade students met the 65% attendance threshold.
  • 7th Grade: The attendance rate averaged 63.77%, with some students showing minimal participation.
  • 6th Grade: This grade showed stronger engagement, with an average attendance of 78.13%.

These challenges emphasize the importance of continuous efforts to improve attendance and engagement, ensuring that all students benefit from the tutoring program’s support.

Tutoring Partnership

The partnership between TurtlEd and NewLA showcased significant academic gains among engaged students and highlighted the importance of consistent attendance. Moving forward, targeted strategies to improve attendance, especially among older grade levels, will further enhance the program's impact. TurtlEd remains committed to empowering students with the skills and resources they need to excel.
