PUC Community Charter Elementary School

School Profile

PUC Community Charter Elementary School (PUC CCES) is a charter school in the Northeast San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, serving approximately 300 students from Kindergarten through fifth grade. The school takes a holistic approach to education, blending core academic subjects with arts, physical education, and character development. Committed to its mission, PUC CCES prioritizes individualized student support, fosters strong community engagement, and offers extended learning opportunities to ensure each student thrives academically and personally.

Partnership Overview

To address academic gaps in math and improve student performance, TurtlEd extended its partnership with PUC CCES in the fall of 2024 to offer dedicated math tutoring support for 50 students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. This partnership aligned with the school's data-driven approach to education, identifying students who require targeted intervention to build foundational math skills and boost confidence in problem-solving.

Program Details

TurtlEd designed a targeted math tutoring program to support the school’s academic goals, serving elementary students over a 10-week period.

  • Students were placed in small groups of 5 based on their learning needs.
  • Tutoring sessions were held online after school.
  • Each group met twice a week.
  • Students were paired with the same certified tutor for the entire program.
  • The TurtlEd team collaborated closely with school administrators to provide regular feedback.

Student Participation & Attendance

Out of the 50 students enrolled in the tutoring program, the overall attendance rate was 84%. Fourth grade had the highest attendance at 90%, demonstrating consistent engagement. Third grade followed with 82%, while fifth grade had the lowest attendance at 78%. Notably, 16 students maintained an attendance rate of 90% or higher, including 5 students who achieved perfect attendance.

Tutoring Outcomes

There was an average growth of 0.44 grade levels across all students, with those attending 70% or more of sessions achieving an average growth of 0.49 grade levels. When broken down by grade level:

  • 4th graders showed the most improvement, with an average growth of 0.55 grade levels.
  • 3rd graders experienced an average increase of 0.43 grade levels.
  • 5th graders improved by 0.39 grade levels.

Overall, several students showed remarkable improvement across different mathematical domains. Measurement and Data saw the greatest progress, with an overall increase of 0.8, rising to 0.83 for students with strong attendance. In Geometry, students achieved a growth of 0.49, which improved to 0.54 among those with higher attendance. These findings emphasize the strong connection between attendance and student success.

Tutoring Partnership

TurtlEd's ongoing partnership with PUC CCES has proven successful in addressing academic gaps through effective, high-impact tutoring strategies. With a strong attendance rate, this partnership has flourished thanks to the dedication of both students and school staff. Tutoring played a pivotal role in supporting student growth, enhancing their confidence in math, and equipping them with essential skills to reach new academic milestones. Looking ahead, we are excited to build on this momentum, further enriching students' learning experiences and creating a lasting, positive impact on their academic journeys.
